Ask Coach Aslester About Level

Core L1-L6 Pathway

Each level has a student-friendly focus, a clear pass standard, and practical skills to practise.

L1

Water Confidence

Feel safe, relaxed, and willing to engage with the water before formal stroke learning begins.

Pass standard

Enter water safely, place face in water, float briefly with minimal support, recover to standing, and follow basic safety instructions.

  • Safe pool entry and exit
  • Face in water and blow bubbles
  • Front and back float with support reduced
  • Recover from float to standing
L2

Balance & Safety

Build body balance, recovery skills, and early self-rescue awareness.

Pass standard

Float, roll, glide, recover, move toward safety, and stay calm during simple safety drills.

  • Front and back float for about 10 seconds
  • Front and back glide
  • Roll from front to back
  • Move 3-5m toward the pool edge and call for help
L3

Movement & Breathing

Start swimming short distances with coordinated kicking, breathing control, and safe recovery.

Pass standard

Swim short distances on front and back with controlled movement, breathing, and recovery.

  • Streamline push-off with kick
  • Freestyle kick with board
  • Bubble breathing while moving
  • Front and back swim 10-15m
L4

Stroke Foundation

Build recognizable freestyle, backstroke, and basic breaststroke structure.

Pass standard

Swim 25m with recognizable stroke structure, breathing control, tread water, and basic safety awareness.

  • Freestyle 25m with side breathing
  • Backstroke 25m
  • Basic breaststroke kick or timing
  • Tread water for about 1 minute
L5

Technique & Endurance

Improve stroke efficiency, stamina, pacing, and safety judgment.

Pass standard

Swim 50m with controlled breathing and improving technique, manage fatigue, and explain basic safety responses.

  • Freestyle 50m with consistent breathing
  • Backstroke 50m with alignment
  • Breaststroke 25m with coordination
  • Float, recover, and continue when tired
L6

Independent Swimmer

Swim independently within safe limits, manage fatigue, and choose the next specialist pathway.

Pass standard

Swim 100m with control, recover when tired, tread water, understand safety decisions, and prepare for the next pathway.

  • Freestyle 100m with controlled effort
  • Tread water for about 2 minutes
  • Swim-float-swim recovery sequence
  • Personal next-step plan

Specialist Pathways

After or alongside the core pathway, the lesson plan can focus on the swimmer's actual goal.

SwimSafer Preparation

SwimSafer-style water safety, survival, swimming, and rescue-awareness readiness. This is preparation support, not an official certification claim.

Adult Confidence & Technique

For adults learning from zero, overcoming fear, correcting strokes, swimming for fitness, or preparing for open-water goals.

Open Water Readiness

For swimmers with pool competence who want sea swimming, event preparation, sighting, pacing, and open-water safety.
